Surgery to Improve <span class="highlight">Lymphedema</span> for People with Stage I-IV Breast Cancer

The LYMPH Trial - Comparing Microsurgical With Conservative Treatment of Chronic Breast Cancer Associated <span class="highlight">Lymphedema:</span> Study Protocol of a Pragmatic Randomized International Multicentre Superiority Trial

Purpose: To study the ability of lymphatic surgery to improve quality of life compared to standard of care treatment.

Who is this for?: People with stage I, stage II, stage III, or stage IV (metastatic) breast cancer who are experiencing <span class="highlight">lymphedema</span> for at least 3 months. You must have received <span class="highlight">lymphedema</span> treatment for at least 3 months. View full eligibility criteria

What's involved?

<p class="seamTextPara"> You will be randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: </p> <p class="seamTextPara"> <i class="seamTextEmphasis">Group 1: Experimental</i> </p> <ul class="seamTextUnorderedList"> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Lymphatic surgery, 1-2 times</li> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Questionnaires</li> </ul> <p class="seamTextPara"> <i class="seamTextEmphasis">Group 2: Standard of Care</i> </p> <ul class="seamTextUnorderedList"> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Conservative complex physical decongestion therapy</li> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Questionnaires</li></ul>

What's being studied?

<ul class="seamTextUnorderedList"> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Lymphedema is abnormal swelling in the arm, hand, breast, or torso that develops as a side effect of breast cancer treatments like surgery and radiation therapy.</li> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Standard of care treatment for <span class="highlight">lymphedema</span> is called conservative complex physical decongestion therapy.</li> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">This includes manual massage to increase lymph drainage, local compression with bandages and garments, physical exercise, and careful skin care. However, these treatments are not always successful and only address symptoms.</li> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Lymphatic surgery may be able to address the cause of <span class="highlight">lymphedema</span> to drain and restore the flow of lymph fluid.</li></ul>
