How Three Different Types of Radiation Therapy Affect the Immune System in Oligometastatic Breast Cancer

Observational Study of Immune Responses in Prostate, Lung, Melanoma and Breast Cancer Patients Following Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy (SBRT), Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) or Brachytherapy

Purpose: To study how different types of radiation therapy in people with a small number of metastases affect the immune system.

Who is this for?: People with oligometastatic (defined below) breast cancer. View full eligibility criteria

What's being studied?

Oligometastatic breast cancer is metastatic breast cancer with a small number of metastases.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to damage cancer cell DNA. This stops cancer cells from dividing and growing, thus slowing or stopping tumor growth.

For this trial, you will receive one of three types of radiation therapy Stereotactic Body Radiotherapy, Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy, or brachytherapy.

Stereotactic radiation (stereotactic radiosurgery) delivers high-dose, precisely-targeted radiation in fewer doses than traditional radiation therapy.

Intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) is a type of high-precision radiation that gives the radiation dose in the three-dimensional shape of the tumor.

Brachytherapy is a type of internal radiation therapy. It works by placing a radioactive material directly inside or next to the tumor. It takes less time than traditional radiation and uses a higher total radiation dose to treat a smaller area.

This trial is also enrolling people with other types of oligometastatic cancer.
