Spinal Fluid (CSF) Collection Study for Women with Metastatic Triple Negative or HER2 Positive Breast Cancer

Sample Collection Study to Analyze Cerebral Spinal Fluid as a Biomarker for Brain Metastasis in Metastatic Breast Cancer

Purpose: To collect and study spinal fluid, blood, tumor tissue, and saliva samples to learn whether tumor DNA found in these samples can help predict if and when breast cancer will spread to the brain.

Who is this for?: Women with metastatic (stage IV) breast cancer that is triple negative (ER-, PR-, HER2-) or HER2 positive (HER2+), and whose cancer has not spread to the brain (no current or past brain metastases) or leptomeningeal disease. You must have not yet started treatment or have received at least one line of treatment for your metastatic cancer. To enroll in the trial, you must be able to have a spinal fluid collection (lumbar puncture) and a brain MRI. You must be receiving care at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. View full eligibility criteria

What's involved?

You will be asked to give the following samples:

Spinal fluid, collected with a thin needle placed into the lower back to draw fluid from the space around the spinal cord

Blood

Saliva or a cheek swab

Tumor tissue, using leftover tissue from a past biopsy if you have had one

What's being studied?

Brain metastases (brain mets) is when breast cancer spreads to the brain.

Researchers want to find out whether tumor DNA (small pieces of genetic material from the cancer) found in spinal fluid, blood, or tumor tissue can help show if and when breast cancer might spread to the brain.

In this study, researchers collect and analyze these samples to look for patterns that could one day help doctors identify people at higher risk earlier.
