A Counseling Study (Meaning Centered Psychotherapy) for Latinos with Advanced Breast Cancer

Trial of Meaning Centered Psychotherapy for Mexican Patients With Advanced Cancer

Purpose: To study the effects (good and bad) of whether Meaning Centered Psychotherapy for Latinos (MCP-L), a structured form of counseling adapted into Spanish, helps lower anxiety and depression and improves quality of life for people living with advanced cancer, compared with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

Who is this for?: People with advanced (some stage III) or metastatic (stage IV) breast cancer. You must be 18 or older and able to read and communicate in Spanish. This trial is also enrolling people with other types of cancer. View full eligibility criteria

What's involved?

<p class="seamTextPara"> You will be assigned to 1 of 2 groups: </p> <p class="seamTextPara"> <i class="seamTextEmphasis">Group 1</i> </p> <ul class="seamTextUnorderedList"> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem"> Meaning Centered Psychotherapy for Latinos (MCP-L), given as one on one counseling sessions, each about 60 minutes, weekly or spaced out based on your preference</li> </ul> <p class="seamTextPara"> <i class="seamTextEmphasis">Group 2</i> </p> <ul class="seamTextUnorderedList"> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)</li></ul>

What's being studied?

<ul class="seamTextUnorderedList"> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Living with advanced cancer can bring anxiety, depression, and questions about meaning and purpose.</li> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">This study looks at Meaning Centered Psychotherapy for Latinos (MCP-L), a counseling program that has been culturally adapted into Spanish.</li> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">The study compares MCP-L with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), a widely used talk therapy, to see which better reduces anxiety and depression and improves quality of life.</li></ul>
