Genetic Counseling Education for African American Cancer Survivors

A Community-Engaged Approach to Culturally Adapting an Intervention to Increase Uptake of Genetic Testing Among African American Cancer Survivors

Purpose: To develop and test an online educational program about genetic counseling and testing that is culturally tailored for African American cancer survivors.

Who is this for?: African American people who completed active treatment for stage I or stage II or stage III breast cancer enrolled in the Detroit Research on Cancer Survivors (Detroit ROCS) group, receive or have received care at Karmanos Cancer Institute, and have not previously had genetic counseling or genetic testing. You must have been diagnosed with breast cancer on or after January 1, 2013, and meet at least one of the following criteria for breast cancer: you were diagnosed with breast cancer at age 50 or younger OR have a personal history of triple-negative breast cancer (ER-, PR-, HER2-) or have at least one close relative (parent, sibling, child, grandparent, aunt, or uncle) diagnosed with breast cancer before age 50. <ul class="seamTextUnorderedList"> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">Researchers want to know whether a culturally adapted online genetic counseling education program can increase the number of African American cancer survivors who choose to pursue genetic counseling and testing. </li> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">The study also looks at how beliefs, attitudes, knowledge, perceived risk, family communication about cancer, and experiences of discrimination affect a person's decision to get genetic testing.</li> <li class="seamTextUnorderedListItem">The goal is to increase the number of people who follow through with genetic counseling and testing, which can help identify inherited cancer risks that may affect them and their families.</li></ul>
